Skating System calculator: the results of a final, place by place

Enter how many judges and couples there are, then the place each judge gives each couple: the calculator applies the Skating System and explains every placing, with the majority, the sum and the rule that decided it. It also works for multi-dance finals (rules 9, 10 and 11) and for callback rounds. It uses the same engine DanceMatik uses for official competition reports.

How to read the Skating System

Majority, not sum
A place goes to the couple that has a majority of judges — more than half — at that place or better. The sum of placings only counts to choose between couples with the same majority.
The columns
The «1st–3rd» column counts how many judges placed the couple in the top three. First place is looked for in the «1st» column, then you move right until someone reaches a majority.
Rules 6 and 7
If several couples reach a majority in the same column, the larger majority wins; if equal, the lower sum of the placings that form the majority; if the sum is also equal, the next column decides.
Several dances: rules 9, 10 and 11
In multi-dance finals the places of each dance are added up (rule 9). On equal sums, the dances won at that place or better decide (rule 10), then all judges’ placings across all dances together (rule 11).
Callbacks
In the preliminary rounds each judge marks the couples they want in the next round, as many as go through. The couples with the most marks go through; if there is a tie exactly at the cut, the chairperson decides.

Frequently asked questions

How is the Skating System calculated?
The Skating System gives each place to the couple with a majority of judges at that place or better, moving through the columns from the left. With an equal majority the lower sum of placings wins, and multi-dance finals apply rules 9, 10 and 11.
Does the calculator store the data I enter?
No: DanceMatik’s Skating System calculator works only in your browser. Nothing is stored or sent, and you do not need to sign up.
Is it the same calculation as the official reports?
Yes: the calculator uses the same engine DanceMatik uses to calculate live competitions and write official reports, rules 9-11 included. At a competition the marks come from the judges’ phones instead of a table.
What happens with a perfect tie?
With the Skating System, a tie that no column breaks makes the couples involved share the place, and the calculator shows it that way. At a competition on DanceMatik, when a tie cannot be settled from the marks, the chairperson decides and the decision goes into the report.

At a competition, judges do the same calculation from their phones

With DanceMatik judges vote from a web page, the chairperson runs rounds and finals and the report shows how every place was reached.
